The President's Polo Cup

President’s Polo Cup “The President’s Polo Cup” was introduced in the year 1975, under the patronage of Late President Shri Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed who was the then Patron-in-Chief of Indian Polo Association (IPA). At that point of time, the IPA was held with the President's Bodyguard (PBG) and accordingly, the President's Bodyguard was responsible for conduct of the President’s Polo Cup on behalf of the President’s Secretariat.

President’s Polo Cup It was a prestigious Cup which was played as an open tournament. A team with minimum of 10 goals handicap qualified to enter and all high goal players participated. The inaugural tournament for this Cup was played in February 1975. The occasion was graced by the then President of India, Late Shri Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed and Begum Abida Ahmed.

President’s Polo CupIn June 2004, the IPA moved from the folds of the President's Bodyguard to 61 Cavalry. After that, from 2005 onwards, the President’s Polo Cup was discontinued. In an effort to revive the legacy of the President Polo Cup, the President's Bodyguard took the initiative with the support of the President’s Secretariat and conducted the first President's Polo Cup Exhibition Match at its Polo Ground in March 2013.

President’s Polo Cup Since March 2013, the President's Polo Cup Exhibition Match has become an annual fixture which is graced by Honorable President Pranab Mukherjee and is witnessed by a host of other dignitaries including Ambassadors of other nations. Since the year 2014, the Exhibition Match is played in the months of November or December to coincide with the 'Delhi Fall Polo Season'. The Exhibition Match is a fine display of equestrian and Polo skills by top players of the country. The Silver Trophy of President's Polo Cup Exhibition Match is displayed proudly in the Officer's Mess of the President's Bodyguard.

In the year 2015, apart from the President's Polo Exhibition Match, another Polo Match was played between the novice teams of budding Polo players which included a few of the President's Bodyguard troopers also. The match was followed by Tent Pegging and Trick Riding Display by valiant riders of the President's Bodyguard who never fail to mesmerize the audience. This event provides a platform where the top players display their equestrian and polo skills and motivate the younger ones to take up riding and polo.
